IAHS QB Coming Along

If you’ve been paying attention since last season ended, you know that Itawamba AHS has a promising young quarterback named Maikhail Miller. He’s just a sophomore, but he has a world of potential. To begin with, he’s big and has a cannon for an arm.

But he’s trying to replace Bret Jefcoat, the Daily Journal All-Area first-teamer who’s now at Southern Miss. Coach Jamie Mitchell said Miller is starting to understand just what he’s gotten himself into. “I think he’s finally realized the importance of his job,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said Miller has improved his work ethic since the spring and is getting his head wrapped around the offense. As good as he might be, Miller won’t have to shoulder a heavy load. That’s because RB Deshaun McGaughy and FB William Shumpert are top-notch ball carriers.

“He’s just got to understand how to manage the game for us,” said Mitchell, who led IAHS to an 11-2 mark and the third round of the Class 4A playoffs last year. “Let these other guys play around him and he do his part.”

I’m more worried about the wide receivers for IAHS than I am the QB. If they WR’s are able to get seperation and consistently catch the football this year, Itawamba is going to be tough to handle. Last year though, there wasn’t much consistency early on and there were a ton of dropped passes. I don’t see Miller really making IAHS beat themselves and McGaughy and Shumpert in the backfield is just scary.

Mikhail Miller is a good practice QB but time will tell if he can handle the real pressure of games when it really counts. He has bad body language at times when things do not go as planned. His performance in the Meet the Indians scrimmage Aug. 15 wasn’t anything to brag about. I think he completed maybe 3 passes all game after attempting about 15. He threw 1 pick also. Granted Deshaun and William didn’t play because of minor injuries, Miller just can’t depend on them every play. By the way IAHS does have a SENIOR QB, Shawn Lucas, who is the LS/DS who ran and passed the TDS they had in the scrimmage other night. IAHS will find out Aug. 22 against Clarksdale where they stand before they play Amory. IAHS better hope nothing happens to #5 and #28 or things could get rough this season.
