Ken Byars, you might have heard, has resigned as Okolona’s football coach after one season. He’s taken an assistant’s position at Pontotoc. I’ll have a story on that in Friday’s Journal.
In other coaching news:
• New Hope basketball coach Robert Byrd turned in his resignation a couple of weeks ago, but the administration was trying to talk him out of it last I heard. This according to the Commercial Dispatch. The Trojans went 30-9 and won the Class 4A state title this season, but they are losing everything.
• East Oktibbeha football coach William “Sleepy” Robinson, a former MSU quarterback, has left the program to pursue another position at another school. Again, the Dispatch reports.
In today’s Journal, we had a story about Tupelo having the No. 3-ranked high school athletic program in the country by Sports Illustrated. Cool deal.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s paper, I’ll have a story about the schedule cuts made by the state’s superintendents. None of the coaches I’ve spoken with so far are keen on playing fewer games.
Remind your baseball and softball coaches to submit nominations for the Daily Journal All-Area teams. Those will come out the first or second Sunday in June.
