Jeremy Newsome is expected to sign with ICC on Friday. Okolona’s 6-foot-7 post player, the 2007 Daily Journal Player of the Year, had been considering several junior colleges.
The catch: He has to qualify academically. As we learned during his lawsuit hearing against the MHSAA – for those who might not know, he was denied athletic eligibility when he transferred to Nettleton – Newsome had severe academic struggles and even accused Okolona teachers of helping him cheat on standardized tests. His classroom struggles have scared off all the D-I schools that were looking at him … for now.
Newsome wound up playing for Okolona this season, averaging 18.6 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. He is now back at Nettleton trying to graduate on time.
