I definitely like your choice for Boys’ Coach of the Year! Thanks for giving Coach Hazzle his due.

To be coach of the year means you have to win the state championship. I guess. Thompson at Byers is a horrible coach with a boat load of talent. Someone like Cliff Ormon at Pine Grove would have been a much better choice. He didn’t have enough talent to smell Jackson, much less make it there.

  3. Thompson took that program from nothing, and he did not have a “boat load of talent.” You obviously never watched Byers play. They had Rachel Jones and Simone Ryan and some solid role players. I’d say Belmont actually had more overall talent.

Ormon is a fine coach and a great guy, but 1A girls up here was super weak this year.

I have watched Byers play several times, and a couple of those so called role players score 20 a night for teams that doesn’t have Ryan and Jones on the team. 1A girls wasn’t strong top to bottom, but was decent just like 2A girls. Newsome 1st team boys? He is the most overrated player to go through the area in a long, long time. He won’t be a starter in juco.

  5. I’ll have to respectfully disagree, especially on Newsome. Just because he’s not flashy doesn’t mean he isn’t good. There’s a reason so many college and juco coaches like him. Won’t start in juco? Only if he doesn’t make his grades.

I am wondering who are all these college coaches and juco coaches that like him. Before I ever saw him play I was told by two college coaches that he was just a good high school player because of his size and he ran into anyone with similar size he would get shut down.

  7. Before his grades situation came to light, Newsome was talking with Ole Miss, MSU, Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee. According to scout.com, he’s also drawn interest from NC State, Florida St., USM and Tennessee (scout gives him a 2-star rating). He recently made visits to jucos in Florida and Texas, and to ICC.

Of course, when I select this team, I don’t give a rip about the players’ college prospects. That’s not what this team is about. I try, with much help from area high school, AAU and juco coaches, to figure out who were the best players and had the biggest impacts. It’s not easy, but I enjoy it, and I have no doubts I did the best job I could. Call me incompetent if you want, but then you’ll be calling a whole lot of basketball coaches incompetent, too.

Im not calling you incompetent because overall the list is good. Just depends on what coaches you talked to, whether I would call them incompetent or not, because it is some good coaches in this area and its also some terrible coaches. Anytime you make any kind of all-star list its people from every side that is going to be mad, but thats why I read the sports from the daily journal because of information and different viewpoints and opinions. Just glad yall calmed down on the Tupelo High love fest, but its probably deserved this year.

was there a honorable mention list? i didnt get a chance to see the paper only saw this list. Did anyone from Ripley, Nettleton, or South Pontotoc just miss the cut? All three schools had great seasons.

  10. Just first, second and third teams. Players from each of those schools got strong consideration. Believe me, it’s never easy leaving kids like Jordi Vernor, Jamal Farr and Parker Gregory off the team. But, it is a rather exclusive list.

I don’t have a fuss with the list. If it was me, would I select Tyler Pritchard to the first team? Yes, but I admit I am bias. As long as Pritch produces next year, he’s a SURE first teamer LOCK. He has all the makings to be a SURPRISE around Mississippi as far as college prospects go next year. You wouldn’t think a 5’7 guard could go play at the next level (other than JUCO), but not many people around here has seen a 5’7 guard who can play above the rim and has the quickness Pritchard does. Who knows where he’ll end up? He’s already getting letters all the way from the University of Washington to the University Virginia in football, so who knows?
