How pleasant it was to get in the car this morning and hear the Red Sox-A’s season opener on the XM. Great way to start the day, especially when you’re already on your second set of clothes because you spilled your daughter’s gross pink medicine all over you. (Tip: Make sure the lid’s on tight before shaking.)
It made me less grumpy. It was also apropos considering that tonight we at the Journal will dive into the baseball season in Northeast Mississippi. Three marquee games to watch (and that we’ll be covering):
• Unbeaten Tupelo will host Columbus in a Region 2-5A game. The Golden Wave, ranked No. 5 in the nation by Baseball America and No. 1 by the Journal, is 16-0 overall, 3-0 in region play; Columbus is 0-3 in region.
• Tishomingo Co. (13-2), the Journal’s No. 2 team, visits No. 3 New Albany (17-3) in what should be a pitchers’ duel. Sources tell me – well, OK, tcfan tells me – that Tish will send Matt Davis against New Albany ace Brad Luna. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy this 1-4A showdown.
• Defending 3A state champ Nettleton, ranked No. 5, travels to No. 7 South Pontotoc in a 2-3A game. I don’t have updated records, but I know South is coming off a 6-2 loss to No. 8 Houston on Friday.
Other games of note: No. 6 Mooreville at Booneville; No. 9 Calhoun City at Ingomar; Itawamba AHS at No. 10 Saltillo.
So, that’s something to look forward to as you eat … well, if you’re eating now, it’s probably brunch. Close enough.
