Back to Baseball (& Softball)

Tupelo’s Gardner Richey

Though my thoughts are still lingering on basketball – I still have an All-Area team to put together, you know – it is now time to turn our attention toward baseball and fast-pitch softball. My new rankings will come out Friday, and I’ve been tracking down records to try and get a jump on things.

In fact, I’ve got updated records on each of the baseball teams in my preseason rankings (which was released Feb. 15). Obviously, I thought too much of a couple of teams, though it’s still early. So, here are the top 10 preseason teams with current records; and remember, these rankings will change Friday.

1. Tupelo: 13-0
2. Tishomingo Co.: 9-2
3. Oxford: 10-2
4. New Albany: 12-2
5. Nettleton: 9-3
6. Itawamba AHS: 4-10(!)
7. Mooreville: 12-2
8. East Union: 9-7
9. South Pontotoc: 9-3
10. Houston: 8-2

Some key results so far: Tupelo over Tish; South Pontotoc over Tish; Tish over Oxford; Booneville over New Albany; Saltillo over Nettleton; Nettleton over IAHS; Saltillo over Mooreville; Houston over IAHS; Houston over Saltillo twice.

Can’t figure out Saltillo yet. I guess the Tigers are seeking consistency, as coaches like to say. This mixed bag of early results is not too terribly surprising, seeing as Tupelo is in its own category, while parity reigns among the rest.

Pontotoc is 9-5 and could break into the rankings this week. So today’s question is:

Who have y’all seen that might deserve top-10 recognition?

  1. Just to throw this one in the above mix as well… Oxford over Booneville

Calhoun City seems to be one of the top NE MS teams in 1A this season with back to back wins over Ripely and East Union in the Pontotoc Tournament on the same day, but the measuring stick game will be Thursday night @ Houston… If I am thinking right they are 12-1.5 with the game vs Ingomar to be finished at a later date…
