I enjoyed your coverage of the Grand Slam, thanks.

Seems to me the outcomes, as last year, were fairly predictable (5a beat 4a beat 3a beat 2a beat 1a), except for the slight deviation of 4a beat 5a (girls times 2 years, boys times one last year). Observing the games this weekend, it’s clear that the bigger the school, the greater numbers of big athletic players available to fill out a team.

Also, in New Hope’s case, the road to the 4A title was brutal. The Trojans squeeked by against Noxubee 30-24 in a stall ball district title game, then edged by Lanier, Oxford, Callaway, and Vicksburg in a time span of 100 hours. The 4A state championship game was a come from behind in the last minute to send it into overtime affair to defeat Picayune. All this to say the 4A title was the primary objective for a team that had been runnerup last year, and quarterfinalist the year before that. Any team with a division title last year and a Grand Slam runnerup finish that year, will in my view be more motivated to win the Slam.

In order to create a more competive and less predictable Grand Slam, I wish the MHSAA would consider taking the All Star Game route for the GS. There are lots of different scenarios, but I would favor choosing All Stars from the different divisions, then have NE, NW, SE, and SW teams (with the crosshairs on Jackson) with some liberal fudging to ‘even out’ the teams with players from all 5 school classifications.

Play the NE v NW boys and girls games on thursday, the SE v SW boys and girls games on friday, then 2 games (or 4 games in two sessions) on Saturday. This would involve more people from more schools from more regions of the state with more topflight players bound for more big name colleges to showcase.

Brad, please put together my proposal’s rosters for these 4 teams in boys and girls and analyze how you think it would have worked out for 2008. It would make for an interesting thought experiment. Feel free to forward this to Mr McCoy and Dr. Proctor.
