The Daily Journal’s top two baseball teams, No. 1 Tupelo and No. 2 Tishomingo County, met Monday night in the ICC Challenge. Both teams went in undefeated.
You might know by now that Tupelo won, 7-3. It was a late game, which is why there was no box in today’s paper, and it’s too bad we couldn’t cover it.
Not that it was pretty. The teams combined to walk 17 batters, and Tishomingo scored all its runs off Golden Wave errors, including two on a two-out error by shortstop Chris Stratton to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning.
Tupelo responded in the bottom half with four runs off reliever Tyler Pritchard before the game was called on account of the time limit. Joseph Koon hit an RBI single, Nathan Flanagan drove one home on a sac fly, and Stratton redeemed himself with a two-run single.
Jacob McGregor, who had relieved starter Kyle Thornton in the top of the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded, got the final out to earn the win. Pritchard took the loss.
Tupelo is 9-0 heading into tonight’s 8 o’clock meeting with South Pontotoc. Tishomingo is 7-1 after beating Mantachie earlier today, and the Braves have a Region 1-4A game at Shannon tonight.
The Daily Journal baseball rankings will return next Friday (March 21), as will the high schools page. Yay.
