David Ball Resigns

After six seasons, David Ball has resigned as Tupelo’s boys head basketball coach. Ball told the Daily Journal’s Gene Phelps on Wednesday that he doesn’t have a new job lined up, but it was just time for him to move on.

Ball made no state tournament appearances with the Golden Wave. The team reached the North Mississippi tournament this season, losing to Horn Lake in the first round. Tupelo finished 19-8 and exceeded the expectations of many observers who thought the Wave – with no starters taller than 6-foot-3 – too small to go very far.

Ball’s a good coach that had some people with unrealistic expectations. Good luck to wherever he goes. I expect he won’t have too much trouble finding a new job.

Wow. How did they manage to run him off. Has everything we need in a coach–passion, work ethic, love for the game, and a role model. I hope he gets to a place that appreciates what he does. I hate it mostly for the kids at THS. First year they played his game full stride as a team. Somebody will pick him up in a jiff!!

True lt2c, I see Jon Ginn getting a call from Tupelo. I don’t see him pursuing it. He’s got a great situation at Pontotoc where people understand that getting far in tournaments isn’t as easy as it looks. It was a smart move for Ball to get out now, he can entertain almost any open job in the state.
