Houlka vs. East Oktibbeha

Final: East Oktibbeha 52, Houlka 21. Here’s the lead from tomorrow’s story …

JACKSON – East Oktibbeha is no longer a one-woman show.

April Sykes, the senior McDonald’s All-American, is unquestionably the star of the team. But the Lady Titans showed Tuesday that Sykes’ line isn’t the only one worth reading on the stat sheet.

Sykes scored 18 points – seven below her season average and well below what she’s capable of on a given night – and the senior guard had plenty of help in East Oktibbeha’s 52-21 win against Houlka in the Class 1A semifinals of the MHSAA Basketball State Tournament.

The defending state champs will battle the winner of today’s Coldwater/Pisgah game in Saturday’s title match.

Senior Cassandra Bradford had 12 points for East Oktibbeha (32-2), the South No. 1 seed, and her niece, senior LaPortia Hendrix, added nine points.

I would just like to say that I dont believe any basketball team is a one person show. There may be those students who are outstanding but they have 4 other teammates on the floor not to mention the ones on the bench. It takes 5 to play the game of basketball…5 makes a team oh and look there is no I in the word team.
