More on games from Day 3

Class 4A Girls
Brookhaven 50, Pontotoc 48, OT

JACKSON (AP) – Nikki Byrd scored 18 points and hit the only basket in overtime to lead Brookhaven to a 50-48 win over Pontotoc on Wednesday.

Pontotoc (31-4) held the ball for the final shots of regulation and overtime, but missed both.

Swayze Black added 12 points for Brookhaven.

Di’Amber Johnson scored all 14 of her points for Pontotoc (31-4) in the first half. Rhandi Ball added 11 points and Ranisha Williams scored 10.

Brookhaven plays Gentry (36-0) in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Class 4A Boys
Ridgeland 42, St. Stanislaus 39, OT

JACKSON – James Archie scored 11 points and hit two free throws with 5 seconds left in overtime to seal a 42-39 win over St. Stanislaus on Wednesday in the Class 4A boys state tournament.

Archie also had a key 3-pointer late in the game for the Titans (31-6), who were tied 37-37 with the Rock-a-chaws (31-4) at the end of regulation.

T.J. Allen also had 11 points for Ridgeland and Jeff Stubbs added 10.

Raymond Pittman led St. Stanislaus with 10 points.

Ridgeland plays New Hope (27-8) in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Class 1A Girls
Houlka 58, McAdams 53

JACKSON – Candiace McIntosh had 25 points and 12 rebounds as Houlka pulled away from McAdams late in a 58-53 win Wednesday in the Class 1A girls state tournament.

The Lady Wildcats (23-12) trailed much of the game and were behind 34-30 at halftime. But they outscored the Lady Bulldogs (32-6) 17-7 in the final quarter to advance.

Courtney Knox and Ronniekka Steward had 10 apiece for Houlka.

LaChelle Kilbert led McAdams with 17 points, Tiffany Haynes added 15 and Kierra Gilmore scored 11.

Houlka will play East Oktibbeha (31-2) in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Class 1A Boys
Coldwater 89, Puckett 50

JACKSON – Jeremy Scott scored 14 points and Coldwater quickly dispatched Puckett in an 89-50 win Wednesday in the Class 1A boys state tournament.

The Cougars (22-11) outscored the Wolves (20-7) 32-9 in the first quarter and 18-5 in the fourth to advance.

Terrance Milam scored 12 for Coldwater, Zack Jennings had 11 and Nicomus Sipp added 10.

Christian Holmes scored all 13 of his points for Puckett in the second half and Matt Willis added 11.

Coldwater plays Durant (23-9) in Tuesday’s semifinal.

There’s an all NeMiss battle today in Jackson

At least one Northeast Mississippi team will advance today in the state tournament.

That’s because of a rare all-NeMiss matchup in the Class 1A boys quarterfinals. Hickory Flat (21-15, No. 3 North) and East Webster (21-9, South No. 2) will meet at 2:30 p.m. Through the first three days of the state tourney, NeMiss teams are 1-4.

Hickory Flat has history here, having won three state championships in the 1980s and reaching the 2005 final. But the Rebels flew under the radar this season in the loaded 1A North, getting a breakthrough win against Jeremy Newsome’s Okolona squad in the North Mississippi quarterfinals.

East Webster has no history – this is the Wolverines’ first trip to Jackson. With most of its players on the football field deep into November, they got off to a slow start but are peaking.

Also today, in 1A girls, Pine Grove (28-11, North No. 3) will battle Pisgah (29-3, South No. 2). Pisgah boasts much more speed than the Lady Panthers: Two of its starters took home sprint medals at last year’s track and field championships, including 100-meter champ Tori Bowie.
