The long journey to Tupelo begins tonight.
Well, more like 4 o’clock, which is when several region tournaments tip off. Then next week, North half begins. Then on Feb. 25, the two-week-long state tournament starts. Although I think it’s ridiculous that a state basketball tournament would include so many teams – I’ve watched teams that had no business being there – and although the Coliseum is a decrepit venue, it somehow makes for a fun atmosphere. I always look forward to the trip, except the part about not seeing my family for two straight weeks.
And finally, starting March 13, it’s Grand Slam time. You can call it a mere exhibition, or a showcase, but the simple truth is that it’s the best teams in the state. It’s special, and I hope it regains the prestige it once had.
So, our Road to the Grand Slam coverage begins. We’ll be out at region tournaments every night this week and won’t slow down one bit until those silver trophies are hoisted at BancorpSouth Arena.
