Quote of the Week

Batman & Robin

And the honor goes to West Point boys basketball coach Thomas Brooks, when speaking about guards Michael Carr and Gary Davidson: “They are like Batman and Robin. Mike is Batman and his sidekick is Gary, but if you asked Gary, he would say that he is Batman and Mike is Robin.”

Thanks to Logan Lowery of West Point’s Daily Times Leader for that quote. Logan, you are Robin to my Batman!

Where Next for Rolison?

I don’t normally write about assistant coaches who are looking for a job. But Trey Rolison isn’t long for an assistant’s role. He’s a rather hot young candidate for head openings – or he would be if any openings were to be had.

Nettleton is closing in on replacing Scott Cantrell, and of course New Albany filled its vacancy with Ron Price, who was a fellow Bulldog assistant of Rolison’s this past season, Rolison’s only season at the school. Rolison also applied for the job.

No other are openings are to be found. There’s Grenada to the west, Durant to the south. But Rolison is from Ripley and has coached at Olive Branch and Corinth. He’d like to stay in the area, even if it’s not as a head coach yet.

“I’d love to be a coordinator. I’d love to be a head coach right now,” the 28-year-old said Wednesday.

He did a fine job as New Albany’s offensive coordinator. His unit averaged 31 ppg and produced a 1,700-yard back in Jeremy Cannon. While at Olive Branch under Jamie Mitchell, Rolison was essentially co-offensive coordinator and handled the run game.

We had 14 head coaching changes after the 2006 season. After Nettleton makes a hire, it’ll be only three so far this offseason. So Rolison might have to wait, but probably not too long.

Back, Ready for Hoops (& Soccer)

I’m finally over this stinking flu, which means I can return to work Monday. Just in time, too, because we’ve got one more big week of regular season basketball. The following week is pretty meaningless – few division games – and then the postseason!

Also, the soccer playoffs begin Tuesday. I’d love to tell you who all was in it, but the crack staff at the MHSAA doesn’t have the brackets completed, as usual. Even though the regular season’s over. I do wonder if they even have someone in charge of the Web site, because it’s pretty useless, especially compared to sites like Alabama’s and Tennessee’s.

I digress. Some of the big games to watch this week:

Tuesday: Houston at Nettleton (boys & girls); Aberdeen at South Pontotoc (girls)

Thursday: Shannon at Pontotoc (boys); Myrtle at Marshall Aca. (MHSAA vs. MPSA)

Friday: Gentry at Oxford (girls, defending Slam champs vs. DJ No. 2); Ripley at Booneville (boys)

Saturday: Tupelo at Nettleton (boys)
