Bloggin’ from BancorpSouth

The Tip Off to the Slam basketball tournament is under way. Some quick scores: Olive Branch 49, Tupelo 35 (the only girls game); Piney Woods 43, Grenada 41. Right now it’s St. Stanislaus against Olive Branch. Coming later: Alcorn Central vs. Myrtle, Newsome-less Nettleton vs. Tupelo. I’ll blog some more later.

Alcorn Central-Myrtle about to get started. I think Myrtle is averaging 90-something points a game. This could get ugly.

End of 1st Quarter: Myrtle 20, Alcorn Central 11

Halftime: Myrtle 34, Alcorn Central 22

AC made a nice run, got within 23-19 at the 4:02 mark. The Bears were doing a good job getting the ball inside and were taking better shots. But Myrtle woke up and scored 10 unanswered – four layups and a Jimel Judon dunk.

Some quickie half stats:

Alcorn Central: 8-19 FGs, 3-10 3-pointers, 3-4 FTs, 10 turnovers

Myrtle: 11-22 FGs, 2-10 3-pointers, 10-15 FTs, 4 turnovers

Final: Myrtle 69, Alcorn Central 49

Jimel Judon had 17 points for Myrtle, and Justin Jordan had 16. AC got 12 each from Josey Pettigrew and Austin Malone. Myrtle did good getting it inside when the outside shots weren’t falling. AC coach Nick Coln thought his boys played well considering it was their season opener.

Read more on this game in Sunday’s Journal. Nettleton-Tupelo up next.

Just started the second half. Tupelo leads 37-20.

End of 3rd quarter: Tupelo 53, Nettleton 28

Tupelo is quicker with its feet and with the ball. Nettleton is getting flustered. I wonder how much difference Jeremy Newsome would make? Not sure it would be a lot, seeing as how Tupelo’s guards are totally dominating Nettleton’s guards.

Final: Tupelo 73, Nettleton 42. Matt Foster had 21 points for the Wave.
