Softball Finals: Oh-for-2

Read more about these games in Sunday’s Daily Journal. And more coming later on this blog.

Newton Co. over Mooreville: Mooreville’s season – the last for coach Rex Berryman, the last for the seven seniors who had achieved so much – ended with a two-game sweep at the hands of Newton County in the Class 3A state championship series Saturday.

It also brought to end a tumultuous season that began with several players leaving the team and included a midseason slump and second-place finish in Region 2-3A.

Mooreville (28-10) was out-slugged in an 11-9 Game 1 loss, and it managed only seven hits in a 4-0 Game 2 setback.

Bogue Chitto over West Union: West Union’s magical postseason run ended Saturday with a three-game loss to Bogue Chitto in the Class 1A state championship series. After winning Game 1 8-4, West Union’s offense stayed gone too long.

A seventh-inning rally in Game 3 came up short at V.A.Fields. Down 7-2, the Lady Eagles got within 7-6 on Jessica Gates’ two-run single.

But on that play, courtesy runner Kyler Bates was gunned down at third base for the game’s final out.

Is Bogue Chitto celebrating a state championship that Ingomar WOULD’VE won? We will never know.
