Veteran basketball coach Harvey Childers, a two-time Daily Journal Coach of the Year, has retired. The 68-year-old spent 39 years in the profession, finding success wherever he went. He took spent his last six years at Ripley, and he led the Tigers to the MHSAA Basketball State Tournament each of the last four seasons.
Childers finished with a career record of 1,013 wins and 305 losses. He earned 192 wins during a seven-year stint at Northeast Mississippi Community College, which he led to the NJCAA national championship game in 1989.
He won state basketball titles at New Albany in 1977 and 1985, the latter team going undefeated. He was the Journal’s Coach of the Year in ’85 and again last year.
“Talking it over with my wife (Gayle), we just decided it was time,” Childers said Thursday. “It’s fun, but it’s a little hard on a man who’s 68 years old.”
